Bob Gass N4FV Electronics

Buttercup and Bob at AJARC Field Day 2018

My remote HF/6 meter base station is located on Little Bald Mountain, 12 miles South of Greeneville TN.  All equipment and antennas are located in Tennessee although mapping software and PSK reporter say it is in North Carolina.  You will see me most active on 6 meters and I usually leave the remote listening on 50.313.  I use stacked Delta Vee loops for 6, Antron 99 for 10, and an end fed wire for other HF bands.

I was employed for almost 20 years for Phillips Consumer Electronics, first as a TV Repair Technician and then as an  Electronics Repair Specialist for the Phillips Service Company servicing consumer electronics during my years with both divisions.   I have a general radiotelephone license and had a small two way radio servicing business on the side for many years.  In my later years, I worked for East Tennessee State University supervising TV linked classrooms for the Office of Distance Education, now called eLearning.  I also did some part time work for a contractor that did work on radio tower sites.

I’m retired and have arthritis in my hands and knees so I don’t walk very well and my hands just don’t grip as they used to.  I enjoy going to Hamfests looking for bargains as projects to bring back to life.  Much of my spare time is spent working on tube radio equipment if I am not working on a repeater project.  I have a small collection of Swans, Heathkits, Gonsets and other pieces of priceless junk that were either very cheap, left to be recycled, or someone wanted it hauled away.

I’ve accumulated several Johnson Messenger One and Two CB radios over the years and became interested in 10 meter AM operation on 29.000 mhz.  I’ve been working on conversions to 10 meters and it turns out that it is an easy conversion, provided you have the required test equipment and a source of “cheap” crystals.  If you are interested, look at my Johnson Messenger to 10 Meter link and the source for 10 meter crystals for these radios.

My email is on QRZ.  If you don’t have access to QRZ, please use the contact form.

Sometimes I check in to either Good Ole Boys or Moonlighters.
